Santo Tomás Chichicastenango ceremonial huipil.

This beautiful post-1980 huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three cotton base panels. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade in cotton and silk. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The motif is a highly abstracted double headed eagle motif. The sunburst collar is hand embroidered in silk over velvet and unique to Chichicastenango huipiles. This beautiful huipil is in superb condition.

The embroidery is very finely done in silk and a high quality cotton floss. The motif is also very finely done. It is an ancient motif done in a very modern and to me almost edgy manner.

The double headed eagle in Mayan mythology represents the Great God with two faces, one looking to good and the other to evil, or to heaven and earth.

These are great year round. In the winter I wear them over a light sweater and they are cozy.

Measures approximately 35 x 29
