Santo Tomás Chichicastenango huipil.

This beautiful huipil was hand woven on a back strap loom in three cotton base panels. These panels are decorated with supplementary brocade in cotton. The center panel is wider and more extensively decorated. The motif is a highly abstracted double headed eagle motif combined with the universal diamond motif. The sunburst collar is hand embroidered i over velvet and unique to Chichicastenango huipiles. This is a fine older huipil. This style is seldom produced anymore with most Chichicastenango women opting for a totally different style of huipil.
The motif is also very finely done. It is an ancient motif done.
The double headed eagle in Mayan mythology represents the Great God with two faces, one looking to good and the other to evil, or to heaven and earth. The diamond patterns represent the universe.

The panels are uneven and this huipil has some wear, please see the photos. I'll be happy to rehab it and/or even out the panels before sending but don't like to alter these unless I know the new owner wishes it.

These are great year round. In the winter I wear them over a light sweater and they are cozy.

Measures approximately 33 x 29
