These are very special beads hand carved with hand tools by contemporary Mayan artisans. The workmanship is very lovely and unlike the carved jade that I saw anywhere else in Guatemala. the artisans are very sensitive to the jade that they are working with and carefully incorporate the grain and form of the stone into the design. They allow material to dictate the design to a larger degree.

The motif of the bead is a mayan face and a serpent. Maya mythology describes serpents as being the vehicles by which celestial bodies, such as the sun and stars, cross the heavens. The shedding of their skin made them a symbol of rebirth and renewal.

Strung on a wrapped silk cord. The jade is called guatemalita. It is indigenous only to guatemala.

a the necklace measures 17" long.

For more fabulous beaded treasures check out the necklace section of our shop.

A portion of each sale goes to women’s craft collectives, microfinance projects in India, Africa and Afghanistan that we hand-pick and Carbon Fund to offset our carbon footprint.

Thank you!
