These blouses, called huipiles, because of the shape, are iconic of Oaxaca. This is red satin with yellow floral motif is an older style that I have not seen produced any more in the past 20 years I have been visiting Oaxaca. The embroidery is done with a tiny hook. This is an old piece but I bought it without the neck hole having been opened up so it has never been worn so it is in perfect condition. Please note however the marks from where the garment was attached to a frame to allow for the embroidery. These will fade or disappear the first time this garment is washed.
Chest approx 25" Length approx 20" Would fit up to a size M
These make lovely wall hangings.
Both sides are embroidered with the same pattern.
The last trip to Oaxaca and the Istmo where these are made turned up very few of these old hand embroidered huipiles. I had known that they were hard to come by but not realized how nearly impossible they are to find now. So, this may be it! They are treasures.
If you are interested google Tehuana culture as it is fascinating. A matriarchal society where the feminine ideal is a strong woman of some girth! It is common in the istmo of Mexico to see these huipiles worn proudly displaying a big beautiful belly beneath.
