This wrap is a fine example of a Colotenango corte. “The backstrap woven skirts of [Colotenango] are extraordinary. Red and black warp striped, with supplemental weft decoration, they represent the most complex patterning of any daily skirt in Guatemala.” (“Threads of Identity”, Altman and West, p. 139) This classic circa 1980 example of a Colotenango corte was back strap loomed in two well matched all cotton panels. The supplemental weft decoration features bands of chevrons, universal diamonds, zigzags, corn plants and other geometric motifs. The piece shows some wear but is in very good condition.
This is great warm or cool weather wrap.
The piece measures 34 x 94 inches. This is a large one
This is an authentic, not for tourists wool shawl from Tenejapa, Chiapas. Truly fabulous. All wool and finely embroidered with metallic threads. The quality of this style of shawl is something of a status symbol. This one is particularly fine and beautiful.
The wool that goes to make this shawls is raised locally and spun on small top style spindles. This was purchased from the woman that made it.
