Most of these dresses come well loved. It is not uncommon for them to have small burn holes from cooking fire embers or loose embroidery threads. Please expect that. It is part of what makes them wonderful and the price is adjusted to account for overall condition. Any more major issues with the condition will be noted in the text and/ or photos. Please note the small tear and light colored stains in the photos
These blouses, called huipiles, because of the shape, are iconic of Oaxaca. This one is in excellent vintage condition. It is most likely 30 years old or more but it seems to be unworn. There is some wear where the fold has been in the middle.
Tehuana huipiles of this quality of material and craftsmanship are getting very rare.
This one would fit a 6 to 9 year old, I think. The model is a petite 8 year old.
Currently this one has these measurements: Chest approx 18.5" Length approx 16"
Both sides are embroidered with the same pattern.
The last trip to Oaxaca and the Istmo where these are made turned up very few of these old hand embroidered huipiles. I had known that they were hard to come by but not realized how nearly impossible they are to find now. So, this may be it! They are treasures.
If you are interested google Tehuana culture as it is fascinating. A matriarchal society where the feminine ideal is a strong woman of some girth! It is common in the istmo of Mexico to see these huipiles worn proudly displaying a big beautiful belly beneath.
